SEASONAL RECRUITS PRACTICE EVACUATION DRILLS

You have two jobs onboard, the first one is your role in the safety organisation and the second your regular work tasks. This is the foundation of what over 400 seasonal recruits are being taught at Öckerö Martime Center in the Gothenburg archipelago, West Sweden, during the spring. Stena Line has placed a real evacuation system here that releases into the water – the only one in Northern Europe.

STENA LINE OPENS NEW ROUTE TO FINLAND

In recent months, Stena Line has heavily focused on expanding in the Baltic Sea. With its newest route, the ferry operator literally breaks new ground, and closes a gap at the same time. Stena Line’s first ever ferry route to mainland Finland makes up for the now densest route network in Northern Europe, reaching from the Irish Sea to the utmost east of the continent. The opening is also a testament of Stena Line’s approach to act dynamically and consequently, when the customers’ demand is there.

EXPANSION CONTINUES

Over the past year, Stena Line has expanded in the Baltic Sea, increasing both freight and passenger capacity, to cater for increasing demand of sea transportation in the region. This year Stena Line has already introduced new large and modern ferries on both of their two Latvian routes Nynäshamn-Ventspils and Travemünde-Liepaja. The ferry company has announced that the expansion on the Baltic Sea will continue during 2022, increasing both freight- and passenger capacity. The company has announced that they will deploy their two new 240-meter-long fuel-efficient E-Flexer ferries, on the Nynäshamn-Ventspils next year. Stena Line has also announced plans to increase the capacity on the Karlskrona-Gdynia route with the deployment of the two large and modern ferries Stena Scandica and Stena Baltica.

STENA LINE ACCELERATES FOSSIL-FREE SHIPPING

Aim to reduce total CO2 emissions by 30 percent until 2030

FOSSIL FREE SHIPS BEFORE 2030

Ferry company Stena Line plans to start operating two fossil-free battery powered vessels on the route between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn in Denmark no later than 2030. The unique newbuilding project now move from vision to vessel and is a close collaboration between Stena Line and Stena Teknik.

25 YEARS OF SUCCESS

In November Stena Line celebrated the 25th anniversary of the relocation of its ferry services to Belfast (12th November) from Larne in 1995 as well as launching the Holyhead – Dublin route (18th November). During this time, the Irish Sea’s leading ferry company has achieved a number of key milestones including transporting in excess of 45 million passengers, 10 million cars and 10 million freight units.

A LOOONG-TERM INVESTMENT

In the middle of the ongoing pandemic, ferry company Stena Line started the construction of their two new longer E-Flexer ferries in China as well as started the lengthening of Stena Lagan in Turkey. Both projects shows how Stena Line invests long-term in modernising its large European fleet of ferries. Stena Line has not yet revealed the names or the routes.

STENA LINE REDUCES CO2 EMISSIONS

Stena Line continues to reduce CO2 emissions and is now ten years ahead of the international shipping targets for reducing emissions. In the newly published sustainability overview “A Sustainable Journey” Stena Line reports a reduction of both total CO2 emissions and per transported ton onboard the ferries. New, larger and more energy efficient vessels, AI assisted captains and an increased punctuality are some important measures.

FIVE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Stena, Wärtsilä, and Methanex Corporation are proud to mark five years of successful operation of the methanol-fuelled ferry Stena Germanica. This is the first ship in the world to run on methanol as a marine fuel, signifying a major milestone in the continued shift towards a more sustainable future for commercial shipping in line with the industry’s decarbonization efforts.

WEATHER DEPENDENT LASHING OF WHEELED CARGO

With joint forces, Stena Line and Stena Teknik have gained ground for maintaining current operational procedures regarding weather dependent lashing of wheeled cargo
in short-sea shipping.

THE IRISH SEA

After more than six years’ in planning and construction, Stena Line’s newest E-Flexer ferry Stena Estrid started service on the Irish Sea route from Dublin to Holyhead on January 13, 2020.

STENA ESTRID SETS SAIL

What a journey it has been! Six years after initiating the next-generation ferries project for Stena Line, Stena Estrid is now finally ready. She is one of the five new E-Flexer ships that Stena Line has ordered in total. On November 15 Stena Line took
delivery of the Stena Estrid at the AVIC shipyard in Weihai. In the beginning of next year, she will be the first of the three new ships built for the Irish Sea to start operating on the Dublin-Holyhead route.

ROUND UP FOR CHARITY

For the third year in a row, Stena Line launched a fleet-wide donation campaign to support the free, life-saving medical treatments that Mercy Ships provides from its hospital ship in countries where it’s needed the most.

FOUR NEW MERCY SHIPS VOLUNTEERS

The global charity organisation Mercy Ships has been our partner since 2017. In addition to fundraising and creating awareness, we aim to contribute with the unique technical and naval competence held by our employees. This year, two able seamen and two engineers joined the other volunteers at the yard in Grand Canaria, preparing the sailing hospital Africa Mercy for her next mission to Senegal.

WHAT’S GOING ON?

The album “What’s going on?” was released in 1971 by Marvin Gaye. It was a huge hit and was voted one of the greatest albums of all time. Why? Well Marvin Gaye voiced some of the big concerns of his generation – the Vietnam war, inequalities and environmental pollution. And people listened.

SAY HELLO TO STINA

Stena Line aims to become the world's first cognitive ferry company assisted by A.I. But what does it really mean to be cognitive? In this explanation model we show the different levels of cognitivity and how that is translated to one of our most interesting A.I. projects – the chatbot Stina.

THE STENA ESTRID

The ceremonial launch of the Stena Estrid was an important milestone in the major investment program that the new productions in China represent. The Stena Estrid is the first in a series of five E-Flexer vessels, which for Stena Line represents the next generation of energy-efficient and flexible RoPax vessels.

MERCY SHIPS

For the second year in a row, Stena Line launched a fleet-wide donation campaign to support the charity organisation Mercy Ships. During the month of November, customers on all 38 vessels were encouraged to Round Up for Charity. There were also plenty of additional initiatives from Stena Line employees across the network and in total an impressive SEK 200,000 was raised.

AFRICA MERCY

As a gesture of appreciation for her wonderful engagement for Mercy Ships during last year’s donation campaign, Sarah Scowcroft recently visited the hospital ship Africa Mercy in Guinea to see how the GBP 7,414.96 she and her colleagues helped raised is being used.

STENA LINE’S THREE IRISH SEA E-FLEXER SHIPS NOW IN CONSTRUCTION

Stena Line has reached an important milestone in its major new fleet investment programme with the steel cutting of a third E-Flexer RoPax ship to be deployed on its Irish Sea routes. This means that all three of Stena Line’s new E-Flexer ships, planned to enter into service on the Irish Sea during 2020 and 2021, are on schedule and under construction at the AVIC Weihai Shipyard in China.

THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD

I’ve probably got the best job in the world. Travel and social channels fit in with each other perfectly. There’s always something to say. Now all I have to do is to make sure that everybody working at Stena knows that we can be found in social channels and begins to follow and share us. CONTINUED INVESTMENTS IN TRAINING DURING THE YEAR

The investments in training are continuing this year. An alumni meeting for participants from the Stena Leadership Program will be held in March and the leadership program Grow for middle management and specialists will start the following month. It is now also possible to apply for the first courses in the Stena Leader’s Menu.

FIRST AI-ASSISTED VESSEL

Right now, Stena Line is conducting a pilot study with artificial intelligence on board the Stena Scandinavica. The aim is to reduce fuel consumption and minimise environmental impact.

WELLNESS

After Renée Karlsson's daughter met a bowler and took up the sport herself, Renée and her husband also wanted to try it out. It became even more exciting when Mariana Andersson joined Stena Line and it turned out that she had bowled as a child. Now Renée and Mariana, together with their partners, bowl 20 weekends a year with the Mölndal club IK Heim.

EUROPRIDE HAPPINESS

From mid-July until early August the pride flag was seen on board Stena Line’s ships and terminals as the company became a proud partner of EuroPride 2018. The grand finale was the EuroPride closing parade in Gothenburg.

Be aware of fraud this summer!

After a long and cold spring, the warm weather is finally here. As the temperature rises and the days grow longer, attempted fraud is also on the rise. The crooks and fraudsters try to exploit the fact that we, like many other companies, employ summer substitutes who have less experience that our regular staff. IT-related fraud is increasing, both in the form of phishing mail, where the sender wants us to click on links so as to be able to attack us, and as false invoices via e-mail or normal mail.

Stena Line invests big in region Denmark

Stena Line makes a big investment to increase both freight and passenger transport to Denmark. The goal is to increase the number of passengers with 300,000 people and to double the freight volume of the Grenaa route. As part of the investment Stena Line brings the Caribbean to Kattegat with The Reef Bar on the Stena Danica. At the same time the vessel is turned into a digital test arena.

During the spring, Stena Line’s collaboration with the charity organisation Mercy Ships was awarded. This collaboration is about more than just participating in charity, it is also about sharing our know-how and expertise. Accordingly, we have started a joint volunteer program, and this summer the first two volunteers will fly down to the Africa Mercy.

IT IS NOW POSSIBLE FOR MORE STENA COMPANIES TO INVEST IN ROBOTICS

Robotics is a new trend experiencing rapid growth. The advantage is that processes can quickly and simply be automated. At Stena Rederi, there are now five robots, which can be used by all the companies in the group. First out is Stena Line’s accounts department, which initiated the project.

Battery power is the next step in Stena Line's quest to try new environmentally friendly energy types for propulsion of vessels. Stena Line recently signed a contract with Callenberg Technology Group for batteries with a total capacity of 1 MWh which will be installed on Stena Jutlandica which operates between Göteborg and Frederikshavn. Before the summer, battery power when berthing in port will become a reality.
