MAINTAINING OFFSHORE SAFETY
Stena Don, a harsh environment semisubmersible drilling rig, boasts a formidable reputation in the offshore drilling industry. Built in 2001, and suitable for drilling, completion and workover operations, this rig has continually undergone upgrades and retrofits to meet the evolving demands of safety regulations and technological advancements. Stena Don benefits from both a DYNPOS(AUTRO) class dynamic positioning system and POSMOOR (ATAR) 8-point mooring system allowing for operations in water depths up to 650 metres.

a liftable offshore oil rig.

In September 2021, Stena Drilling were delighted to secure a contract with Chariot Energy Ltd to carry out drilling using the semi-submersible unit, Stena Don, as part of the Anchois Gas Development project in offshore Morocco. This was a very exciting prospect for all involved with the rig, as this was the farthest South that the Stena Don had ever worked.

Plug-and-Abandonment (P&A) is the final stage in a well’s lifecycle. After years of production the well comes to an end either because it stops producing or it’s no longer economically viable to produce. The well is then shut down and made safe – this is called Plug-and-Abandonment (P&A).

The downturn in the oil and gas industry following the 2014 oil price crash had still not passed come December 2017 and as a result, most of Stena Drilling’s fleet remained effected by the downturn. As Christmas approached, only two units in the fleet were operational and in the face of such adversity all eyes turned to new opportunities. On a more positive note, though in last quarter of 2017, enquiries for our fleet began to flood in. In response to this influx each enquiry became a project in itself, such was the significance.
