The tanker market is still very weak, but Concordia Maritime's President Kim Ullman believes in a gradual strengthening, beginning in the second quarter. Vaccines, stimulus packages and increased optimism are contributing to a global recovery, which will be reflected in oil consumption and demand for tanker transports. Moreover, growth in the fleet is historically low.

In January this year, Concordia Maritime opened an office in Copenhagen, centrally located and close to the water, in a cluster of other companies in the shipping industry. CFO Ola Helgesson and Sofia Hjälmdahl, accounting manager, have moved into the office. Opening an office in Copenhagen was prompted by a change in the group structure, and the offices in Bermuda and Switzerland have subsequently been closed.

But as the effects fade, there is reason to believe that there will be an increasing demand for tanker transports in line with an increasing consumption of oil. In combination with record-low growth rate in the global tanker fleet, this is expected to lead to a gradually stronger market in 2021.

The Coronavirus had already put its mark on Concordia Maritime's annual general meeting when shareholders were asked a few weeks in advance to consider voting via proxy and early voting. Food and drink were not served, only a few people attended instead of the usual around 100 people, and speeches from both the CEO and the CFO were published on the website instead of being given at the meeting. CEO Kim Ullman noted that 2019 ended with well-functioning operations in a strong market – a market that in the first months of 2020, with the pandemic and falling oil prices, completely changed character.
