NEW CFO AT CONCORDIA MARITIME

Friday afternoon and we are calling Martin Nerfeldt, newly appointed CFO at Concordia Maritime, who is on his way home from Copenhagen.

Martin took over as the new CFO at Concordia Maritime in January and now works at the company’s office in Copenhagen. He really enjoys working there, commuting weekly by train from his home in Kullavik, just south of Gothenburg. The Copenhagen office, inaugurated in January 2018, is located in the pleasant Hellerup district in the middle of a cluster of other companies in the shipping industry. Several Stena companies are gathered here and the office is shared by 30-some employees. There are people from Stena Bulk, Stena Rederi A/S, Stena RoRo and Stena Line. Sofia Hjälmdahl, an employee of Concordia Maritime, also works at the office together with Martin.

BACK HOME IN THE STENA SPHERE

Martin started working at Stena back in 2001, initially at Stena Line, and has since held several other roles and positions in the sphere, including as the group business controller/head of IR for Stena Finans and as the business controller for Northern Marine Management Ltd. in Scotland. It was a big step in 2019 when he decided to enter the retail trade at the clothing company Sail Racing International. A new experience not least since it coincided with the outbreak of the pandemic with a transition to other consumption patterns.

Concordia Maritime is a company that has interested Martin for quite some time and when the opportunity arose to take over as CFO, it felt natural to accept, as well as very exciting.

“I am very happy to be working for Concordia Maritime,” says Martin. “It’s a small, keen and highly skilled organization, with close interaction between staff members. It’s fun working with Kim Ullman, Sofia Hjälmdahl and Lena Björevik, and it also feels really nice to be back at Stena. It’s like a great big happy family.”

A SPORTY PERSON

Martin enjoys sports and together with his family he likes to ski, both cross-country and downhill, and often in Norway where the family has a cabin. He runs a lot and over the years has been a frequent participant in Stena’s activities at the Göteborgsvarvet half marathon as well as in the actual event. He also plays padel and golf in his spare time. Preferably with his two teenage sons, who usually beat him. “Yeah, nowadays I’m actually mostly their caddy or chauffeur,” Martin adds.

KURIOSAWhen he worked at Northern Marine Management, the family lived in Scotland. The children were small, the youngest son just seven weeks old when the family moved there. "The children picked up a lovely Glasgow accent in their English. Unfortunately, it's not there now, but somewhere there are still two Scots living in our home," says Martin with a laugh as the call begins breaking up.

CONCORDIA MARITIME

The tanker market is still very weak, but Concordia Maritime's President Kim Ullman believes in a gradual strengthening, beginning in the second quarter. Vaccines, stimulus packages and increased optimism are contributing to a global recovery, which will be reflected in oil consumption and demand for tanker transports. Moreover, growth in the fleet is historically low.
