PROMOTE A GREENER SHIPPING FUTURE WITH ADDITIONAL METHANOL-READY VESSEL

STENA PROMAN

Stena Proman has finalized an agreement to build an additional vessel under its joint venture partnership. The methanol-powered Stena Prosperous will join the Stena ProPatria and the Stena ProMare in the Proman Stena fleet in H2 2022. Each vessel will use 12,500 tonnes per annum of methanol as a marine fuel, significantly reducing emissions in their normal commercial operations compared to conventional marine fuels.

The Stena Prosperous will initially be utilised by Stena Bulk within their traded pool of ships for a period of two to three years. The vessel will therefore be the first methanol dual-fuel powered ship traded on the chemicals/CPP market by a conventional shipowner without an active contract to a methanol producer. After this initial period, the Stena Prosperous will then enter into a long-term time charter with Proman Shipping.

METHANOL

Methanol is already available at over 100 ports worldwide, including at all major bunkering hubs. It is a clean burning, safe to carry and fully biodegradable fuel, which provides a reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, eliminates sulphur oxide (SOX) and particular matter completely, and cuts nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions by 60% compared to traditional marine fuels.

Every three years, Stena Bulk organizes a network meeting for its senior officers. This year, the meeting was held in connection with the Donsö Shipping Meet, where the participants were also asked to seek out and present different types of innovations that can be of interest to their operations.

STENA BULK INSTALLS CARBON CAPTURE SYSTEM ON MR TANKER

Stena Bulk is gearing up its sustainability focus by installing a mobile carbon capture system on the company’s IMOIIMAX tanker Stena Impero. When up and running,
the equipment is expected to capture 1,000 kg of CO2 per hour, equivalent to the emissions from 100 petrol-powered cars over the same amount of time.

HOW STENA BULK WILL BE CLIMATE NEUTRAL BY 2050

Stena Bulk is already at the forefront in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. The company is now presenting an ambitious plan in five steps – featuring among other things, collaboration with customers – that will lead to the company becoming entirely climate neutral by 2050.
