Dan Sten Olsson - October 2024
ARE WE CURIOUS ENOUGH AND DO WE HAVE THE COURAGE TO THINK AND ACT ACCORDING TO OUR CONVICTIONS?
This year Curiosity has been added to my "White Book" as a precondition for "Innovation". How do we feel, think and act? We do wish each other well and have discovered that there are so many ways we can contribute to a positive world. The theme for this year’s Sphere Forum accordingly was "Curiosity and Courage".
Apart from building knowledge and competence, to drive innovation and change, we also need to discover, explore and learn about new things both theoretically as well as practically.
When exploring, it is so important not to be judgmental and put boun-daries too early.
Talking about being practical. All our businesses right now are adding value giving us something extra to build on for the future. Stena Recycling has gone from being a trading company to a company producing added value. So does Stena Line as well, with a record of satisfied customers. Stena Drilling is top notch and so is Northern Marine’s shipping management. All our main businesses are bringing added value.
It takes trust in each other and willingness to help each other to do things right.
In Stena everyone is an individual and not a number. We can do things together. We trust each other to do things right; Let our people run their businesses in their way, working close with each other and their customers to be able to provide services as to keep us relevant both for today and tomorrow.
Curiosity is a big driving force to create energy and keep moving
forward! We need curious people, that are energetic, but also responsible. Being courageous, but never “careless”.
We must understand before we act, and when we understand, we must act. Responsibly!
By wishing each other well everyone shall feel that one is in a safe environment. That’s a mindset we should have, when working together!
“We are small enough to Care and big enough to Cope”.
To cope we need to earn more money every day. To invest in the future; in people, competence and technology. That is why, we shall be so happy, when there is a cling of more silver in our cash box.
Wishing You all well.

STENA SPHERE FORUM IN WARSAW, POLAND
Stena Recycling Poland hosted this year’s Sphere Forum, organised by the Stena Metall Group. The participants got to learn about Stena’s operations in Poland, and below, Lars Ibsen talks about Stena Recycling, Marek Kiersnowski about Stena Line Poland, and Sofia Granlund about Stena Real Estate.
Stena Recycling
Both curiosity and a lot of courage were needed when Stena Metall, 20 years ago, decided to enter the Polish recycling market and through numerous acquisitions established the foundation of Stena Recycling Poland.
The first fifteen years were very challenging with the integration of many acquired competitors and significant financial losses. However, we managed to turn the company around, and over the past five years, the Polish recycling business has delivered solid profits. The turnaround from losses to profits had three key elements related to Strategy, Culture, and Owners & Management.
In 2016, we formulated a new strategic direction with a clear focus on growing the CORE business. The organization had drifted away from the core business, and employees spent over 80% of their time on problems within less than 20% of the business. It took time to align all employees with the new strategy, requiring clear and frequent communication from management.
In terms of culture, we worked to eliminate a blame culture that had developed due to poor financial performance. A breakthrough occurred in 2018 when aggressive price adjustments were needed. We told the organization that if they didn’t lose clients, they weren’t negotiating hard enough. This sparked collaboration across departments and with clients, leading to significant improvements in both results and motivation.
Achieving alignment with the new strategy and cultural shift took years, during which we continued to lose money. However, we consistently received support and patience from both our owners and Stena Metall’s management, allowing us to address fundamental issues and make sustainable changes.
We are now looking forward to taking the Polish recycling business to the next level.
Stena Line
Next year marks the 30th anniversary of our Gdynia–Karlskrona route, recognized as a ’Motorway of the Sea’ since 2004. This route is a vital transport link in Europe, promoting economic growth in Poland and Sweden.
Since 1995, we’ve transported over 12 million passengers, 2.5 million trucks, and 2 million cars. Our fleet includes three ships, including two new E-Flexer class ferries. In Poland, our new terminal offers further growth opportunities.
This success was made possible by our owners’ bold decision to open the route almost 30 years ago, despite Poland’s political and economical transition. Their investment in ships, people, and resources has allowed continuous growth in freight and passenger volumes.
Today, with 1,700 annual sailings, we connect families, tourists, and businesses, fostering cooperation across the Baltic. We also support collaboration between Gdynia and Karlskrona, sponsoring the Propeller Prize for start-ups.
Last year, Stena Line Poland received an award for introducing two new ferries, Stena Estelle and Stena Ebba. With over 80% customer satisfaction, these ships are now the top-rated in our fleet.
Our success is built on a strong culture of Attitude, Aspiration, and Care. This supportive environment fosters loyal, passionate employees who have driven our success from the start and will continue to do so in the future.
