Dan Sten Olsson - October 2024

ARE WE CURIOUS ENOUGH AND DO WE HAVE THE COURAGE TO THINK AND ACT ACCORDING TO OUR CONVICTIONS?

This year Curiosity has been added to my "White Book" as a precondition for "Innovation". How do we feel, think and act? We do wish each other well and have discovered that there are so many ways we can contribute to a positive world. The theme for this year’s Sphere Forum accordingly was "Curiosity and Courage".

Apart from building knowledge and competence, to drive innovation and change, we also need to discover, explore and learn about new things both theoretically as well as practically.

When exploring, it is so important not to be judgmental and put boun-daries too early.

Talking about being practical. All our businesses right now are adding value giving us something extra to build on for the future. Stena Recycling has gone from being a trading company to a company producing added value. So does Stena Line as well, with a record of satisfied customers. Stena Drilling is top notch and so is Northern Marine’s shipping management. All our main businesses are bringing added value.

It takes trust in each other and willingness to help each other to do things right.

In Stena everyone is an individual and not a number. We can do things together. We trust each other to do things right; Let our people run their businesses in their way, working close with each other and their customers to be able to provide services as to keep us relevant both for today and tomorrow.

Curiosity is a big driving force to create energy and keep moving
forward! We need curious people, that are energetic, but also responsible. Being courageous, but never “careless”.

We must understand before we act, and when we understand, we must act. Responsibly!

By wishing each other well everyone shall feel that one is in a safe environment. That’s a mindset we should have, when working together!

“We are small enough to Care and big enough to Cope”.

To cope we need to earn more money every day. To invest in the future; in people, competence and technology. That is why, we shall be so happy, when there is a cling of more silver in our cash box.

Wishing You all well.

Dan Sten Olsson, CEO

STENA SPHERE FORUM IN WARSAW, POLAND

Stena Recycling Poland hosted this year’s Sphere Forum, organised by the Stena Metall Group. The participants got to learn about Stena’s operations in Poland, and below, Lars Ibsen talks about Stena Recycling, Marek Kiersnowski about Stena Line Poland, and Sofia Granlund about Stena Real Estate.

Stena Recycling

Both curiosity and a lot of courage were needed when Stena Metall, 20 years ago, decided to enter the Polish recycling market and through numerous acquisitions established the foundation of Stena Recycling Poland.

The first fifteen years were very challenging with the integration of many acquired competitors and significant financial losses. However, we managed to turn the company around, and over the past five years, the Polish recycling business has delivered solid profits. The turnaround from losses to profits had three key elements related to Strategy, Culture, and Owners & Management.

In 2016, we formulated a new strategic direction with a clear focus on growing the CORE business. The organization had drifted away from the core business, and employees spent over 80% of their time on problems within less than 20% of the business. It took time to align all employees with the new strategy, requiring clear and frequent communication from management.

In terms of culture, we worked to eliminate a blame culture that had developed due to poor financial performance. A breakthrough occurred in 2018 when aggressive price adjustments were needed. We told the organization that if they didn’t lose clients, they weren’t negotiating hard enough. This sparked collaboration across departments and with clients, leading to significant improvements in both results and motivation.

Achieving alignment with the new strategy and cultural shift took years, during which we continued to lose money. However, we consistently received support and patience from both our owners and Stena Metall’s management, allowing us to address fundamental issues and make sustainable changes.

We are now looking forward to taking the Polish recycling business to the next level.

Stena Line

Next year marks the 30th anniversary of our Gdynia–Karlskrona route, recognized as a ’Motorway of the Sea’ since 2004. This route is a vital transport link in Europe, promoting economic growth in Poland and Sweden.

Since 1995, we’ve transported over 12 million passengers, 2.5 million trucks, and 2 million cars. Our fleet includes three ships, including two new E-Flexer class ferries. In Poland, our new terminal offers further growth opportunities.

This success was made possible by our owners’ bold decision to open the route almost 30 years ago, despite Poland’s political and economical transition. Their investment in ships, people, and resources has allowed continuous growth in freight and passenger volumes.

Today, with 1,700 annual sailings, we connect families, tourists, and businesses, fostering cooperation across the Baltic. We also support collaboration between Gdynia and Karlskrona, sponsoring the Propeller Prize for start-ups.

Last year, Stena Line Poland received an award for introducing two new ferries, Stena Estelle and Stena Ebba. With over 80% customer satisfaction, these ships are now the top-rated in our fleet.

Our success is built on a strong culture of Attitude, Aspiration, and Care. This supportive environment fosters loyal, passionate employees who have driven our success from the start and will continue to do so in the future.

Stena Real Estate

Stena Real Estate continue to expand internationally, with a strong focus on the office market in Poland.

In Poland, our growth follows a ’flight to quality’ strategy, focusing on developing high-quality, energy-efficient properties in Warsaw, Wrocław, and Kraków. By prioritizing modern, eco-friendly solutions, we aim to meet tenants’ evolving needs and contribute to long-term environmental sustainability. Innovation, resilience, and partnerships are key to creating office spaces where businesses can thrive.

Poland’s strong economic growth, skilled workforce, and EU membership make it an attractive investment destination. By focusing on sustainable, high-quality developments, we enhance the value of our portfolio and future-proof the business, ensuring Stena Property remains a leader in real estate innovation.

ENERGY - AN INDISPENSABLE RESOURCE FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND SUCCESS

It is here, there, and everywhere. It exists in our operations, our businesses, and even within us, and it is up to us how we use it. It cannot be destroyed, only transformed, and its name has an origin that means work. A quantity that expresses something with the potential to move or displace. A movement we live in and with, and which we have the opportunity to influence. Sometimes we feel like we have more, sometimes less. And it is of utmost importance for us to reach our goals – we are talking about energy.

Never wasting our own or the worlds resources is a clear guiding principle at Stena, which create sustainability and success in results. For our customers, for society, and for ourselves. But it requires that we generate, store, and most
importantly, use our energy in best possible way. In production, in service delivery, and in our daily work. Being able to provide service, at reduced energy use while maintaining quality, is a winner, always. To achieve this, knowledge, clear priorities, and strong execution are required.

There are many different forms of energy, whereby the choice of energy carrier and efficient energy transfer is of great importance. Updated regulations are important for driving societal change, but we should not underestimate the power of entrepreneurship, business development, and focused work. The laws of physics are however constant, and we need to ensure that we use them to our advantage. Electrification of short-sea shipping is logical since the losses in the energy system are small. Transitioning deep-sea shipping is more challenging and will take time, but there is still great potential for improvement in the short term with the help of new technology and AI for energy optimization, based on the choice of route and voyage execution.

Our curiosity drives us forward towards new discoveries and opportunities. But we must have the courage and strength to take it all the way. The size of the challenge we undertake, multiplied by the energy we apply, gives us our rate of development. Applicable both in business and personal development.

How do you replenish new knowledge and energy? Do you seek broader or deeper, through conversation and information? What gives you energy, and most importantly, how do you give energy to others?

It is here, there, and everywhere. Dont take it for granted and make sure it is used and shared, with great care.

WORKSHOP ON NEW TANKER CONCEPTS

POWERED BY REAL TIME VISUALISATION

The ongoing energy transition and digital transformation will bring a fundamental change to the design of our future ships. Recently, representatives from Stena Teknik, Stena Bulk and Northern Marine joined forces in an innovative workshop where ideas for three new tanker concepts were discussed and visualised in real time by a master ideator from an award-winning industrial design agency.

The workshop was part of a concept design project focusing on new designs for a Medium Range (MR) tanker, a Suezmax and a chemical tanker. The lunch-to-lunch gathering was facilitated by Mika Heikkinen from Northern Works in Finland.

“We want to remain in the forefront now when the decarbonisation and digitalisation trends are gaining momentum rapidly in the shipping industry. Bringing our technical, commercial and operational teams together, with a renowned industrial designer as external ‘power source’, definitely gave the discussions a boost,” says Ron Gerlach, Technical Director at Stena Teknik.

In the workshop, Mika’s creative talent, combined with his ability to understand complex technical challenges, were used to translate the discussions into instant hand drawings of potential vessel designs.

“The possibility to get instant visual expressions of discussed ideas proved to be inspiring and valuable in a previous RoRo project I was part of. The drawings bring the discussion forward, and the most promising ones can be turned into 3D renderings and technical specifications in future project stages,” explains Martin Carlsson, Naval Architect and Project Manager at Stena Teknik.

“The workshop became a spot-on example of Stena Teknik’s ambition to help our shipping colleagues achieve their goals. It even resulted in a spin-off project that will focus on the visual appearance of future ships. New energy sources will influence the look of our vessels. One example is that we may want to fit several massive sail units on an already crowded weather deck. Furthermore, the interior has to be functional and attractive in order to attract and keep the best crew members,” Martin continues.

Jacob Enersen, General Manager Crude & Fuel and projects at Stena Bulk, was also very happy with the outcome of the workshop.

“The key to our future success is to strike the right balance between commercial and technical aspects. By blending experiences from earlier tanker generations with an innovative approach to new challenging demands, we become better equipped to make the right decisions moving forward. Breaking with the traditional way to create new ship concepts makes is easier to push the limits.”

The operational aspects on the new tankers were represented by Martyn Kelly, Fleet Manager at Northern Marine.

“At Northern Marine, we operate the ships on a day-to-day basis from a technical management perspective and it is extremely beneficial in the early stages of the new build project to engage with colleagues from the wider Stena group. Mika’s ability to visualise group discussion points was an invaluable tool in bringing the various ideas and concepts to life,” he says.

Stena Fastigheter invests in summer school for middle school children

“THERE’S A HERO IN EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US”

For children to have meaningful leisure time and to achieve passing grades in the basic subjects of Swedish, mathematics and sports – and to ensure a safe summer – Stena Fastigheter initiated a summer school this year for middle school children. The summer school is called Summer Heroes.

“We started the summer school in Gothenburg with the aim of contributing to the children in our neighborhood having a good summer,” says Claudia Andreasson, relationship manager in Gothenburg, who has implemented the summer school together with other actors. “To increase the desire to learn, we’ve worked with an artist in helping the kids draw their own hero. The hero accompanies the children during the weekly activities, with them describing what the hero feels and does during the weeks of the summer school.”

“The best thing about the summer school is that you make new friends and you feel safe,” says Fatima, a student at the summer school.

The Summer Heroes program was created for children attending Bjurslättsskolan in Lundby, Gothenburg – located a stone’s throw from Stena Fastigheter’s apartments on Fyrklöversgatan, where several of the school’s students live. There are children here who are not achieving passing grades in sports (as they lack swimming skills), mathematics and Swedish.

“Bjurslättsskolan has chosen to participate in this collaboration because it’s important that children have meaningful and pleasurable leisure time, and that they enjoy learning,” says Elisabeth Cadier, principal at Bjurslättsskolan. “The children have fun activities in sports, math and Swedish. We want them to maintain their reading skills and bridge the reading gap that we know occurs during the summer break.”

“When you come to the summer school, you think it’ll be boring, but then it’s not. You make friends and we become like a family,” says Feban, a student at the summer school.

SUMMER SCHOOL – PART OF STENA FASTIGHETER’S WORK WITH SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

The summer school is part of Stena Fastigheter’s relationship management and work to create safe and pleasant neighborhoods where people thrive and have faith in the future. The property management company has initiated and run Summer Heroes, but it has been carried out in close cooperation with several different stakeholders, such as Bjurslättsskolan, the Swedish Lifesaving Society in Gothenburg and the police.

“We feel that this work is a very important and it’s especially nice when a private actor is so involved who carries through with implementation as Stena Fastigheter has done,” says local police officer Hans Jörgen Ostler. “And we want to support and inspire other companies to take similar initiatives.”

“With the summer school, we want to enable the children to get better grades, as well as getting them to believe in having more choices in the future,” says Claudia Andreasson. “We believe in the potential and power of our children. There’s a hero in each and every one of us.” ⁄

The children draw their own hero. Claudia Andreasson, with the student at the summer school.

ABOUT SUMMER HEROES

The Summer Heroes summer school was initiated by Stena Fastigheter in collaboration with Bjurslättsskolan, the Swedish Lifesaving Society in Gothenburg, the local police district, Keolis, the House of Possibilities, artist Elin Andersson and Författarcentrum Väst.

PILOT PROJECT FOR

REUSE AND RECYCLING OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERIES

In a pilot project, Stena Recycling is working to launch Europe’s first complete value chain for both the reuse and recycling of electric vehicle batteries. The project, which has received financial support from Enova, has the potential to revolutionize the battery industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The facility, located in Ausenfjellet, Norway, is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2024. With initial investments, the project has a total budget of 100 million NOK. Construction of the first phase is already underway, with an estimated cost of 54.60 million NOK. Enova is supporting the project with 40%, up to 21.8 million NOK.

ENOVA EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT

“We have chosen to support the project because it has great potential, even beyond Norway’s borders. The project aims to verify that a circular value chain for the reuse and recycling of electric car batteries is possible and marketable. The ambition is that batteries used for energy storage can be made available at a completely different price than before. This will be positive for the energy system and facilitate the transition towards a low-emission society,” explains Astrid Lilliestråle, Director of Technology and Market Development at Enova.

Jon Emil Furuseth, Country Manager, High Energy Batteries at Stena Recycling Norway, has high expectations about the project:

“With support from Enova and our collaboration with EV HUB, we look forward to establishing a complete value chain for the reuse and recycling of electric car batteries – the first of its kind in Europe! GOTHENBURG SHOWS THE WORLD

HOW TO SPEED UP THE ENERGY TRANSITION

How can we accelerate the pace of the energy transition in transportation and logistics and turn green ambitions into actions? Leaders from the World Economic Forum’s Supply Chain and Transport Industries community, chaired by Stena Line CEO Niclas Mårtensson, gathered in Gothenburg 9-10 September to find answers to this critical question.

Moving global transportation and logistics towards a multi-fuel, low carbon future is one of the key objectives on the road to decarbonisation. But the current pace of transformation may not be fast enough to achieve ambitious 2030 and 2050 climate commitments.

EXCHANGING IDEAS FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION

The Gothenburg meeting, titled Industry Mobilization: Catalysing Global Network Infrastructure, focused on how industry initiatives across the energy and transport system, can catalyse action and accelerate delivery of key milestones. Niclas hosted the event’s welcome dinner and helped to chair sessions during the two-day event.

In a series of presentations, discussions and round tables discussions, transport and logistics industry leaders aimed to:

  • understand current gaps in multi-fuel supply and infrastructure
  • identify opportunities to accelerate the energy transition in transportation and supply chains
  • recommend and assess potential collective-action responses

SHARING THE LEARNINGS FROM GOTHENBURG

One of the presentations was on Tranzero, the cross-sector collaboration between Stena Line, the Port of Gothenburg, Volvo Group and Scania, which aims to accelerate the shift towards a fossil-free future.

Stena Line joined with leaders from our Tranzero partners to share the project’s aims, ambitions and key initiatives, and report on progress made since the launch date in 2021 (see project milestones below).

“We know no single actor has all the answers to the challenges of the energy transition,” said Niclas. “The greatest progress is made through collaboration between all parties in the transportation and logistics chain.

“In my role as Governor Chair, it was an honour to welcome the Supply Chain and Transport Industries community, exchange ideas and pass on transferable insights from our collaboration in Gothenburg that can be used to accelerate transformation around the world.”

FORGING LINKS WITH OTHER INDUSTRIES AND FORUMS

Other key sessions during the meeting focused on the networks and infrastructure needed to accelerate the change to a multi-fuel and multi-modal future, and how clusters of different industries in key locations, acting together, can create momentum for clean energy demand.

The meeting also considered how the Supply Chain and Transport Industries community could link with other World Economic Forum initiatives such as Transitioning Industrial Clusters (TIC), the First Movers Coalition (FMC) and Road Freight Zero (RFZ), to catalyse local, regional and global action.

TRANZERO: LEADING THE WAY TO THE ENERGY TRANSITION

The partners work together to plan and implement improvements that will speed up the transition to a fossil-free future. These include providing new green energy infrastructure at the port, access to alternative fuels for heavy vehicles, and the development of new Stena Line battery powered ro-ro ferries.

PROJECT MILESTONES

2021 Mapping of truck journeys, driving patterns and fuel use to inform planning and develop incentives for electrification and hydrogen adoption.

2022 Green priority lanes introduced for electric trucks at two Gothenburg port terminals; a new electric truck charging and hydrogen filling station is launched.

2023 Sustainable infrastructure integrated in pläanning for the new Arendal ferry terminal; a second hydrogen filling station opens at the port’s ro-ro terminal.

2024 Launching a new initiative of Tranzero – Tranzero Energy, focusing on understanding and the future need of electricity and power needed to scale up the energy transition for the industry and transport sectors
in Gothenburg.

STENA RORO ORDERS

TWO NEW MULTIFUEL E-FLEXER ROPAX VESSELS

Stena RoRo has ordered two more E-Flexer vessels from the Chinese shipyard CMI Jinling (Weihai). The ships will be delivered in 2027 to the Greek shipping company Attica and operate between Greece and Italy in the Adriatic Sea. These will be Stena RoRo’s 14th and 15th vessels in the E-Flexer series.

The two ships will be operated on long charter agreements with an option to purchase and a potential option for two more vessels.

FLEXIBLE BASIC CONCEPT

The E-Flexer series is derived from a basic concept but with larger vessels than today’s standard RoPax ferries and are much more flexible. Each ship is tailored to customers’ needs, both commercially and technically. Optimized design of the hull, propellers and rudders helps to ensure that E-Flexer vessels are at the forefront when it comes to sustainability, performance and cost, as well as energy efficiency.

FACTS E-FLEXER NO. 14 & 15
Length:240 metres
Draught:6.4 metres
Beam:27.8 metres
Capacity:1,500 passengers and 3,320 cargo meters freight
Passenger cabins:256
Speed:24 knots

MULTIFUEL ENGINES

The vessels’ engines are of the multi-fuel type and can run on conventional marine fuel (HFO or MGO) or biodiesel. In addition, the engines can be easily supplemented for methanol propulsion. The E-Flexer concept has been engineered in line with future environmental requirements and through its technical design, can meet both existing and future international requirements by a wide margin. The installation of battery-power gear means that in the future, the vessels will also be able to utilize batteries as a means of propulsion, either partly or completely, depending on developments in battery technology.

“The Attica E-Flexer vessels have been designed and commissioned in close cooperation with the customer and are the most tailor-made of our E-Flexer vessels to date,” says Stena RoRo Managing Director Per Westling. The design is extremely versatile and the ships, with their inherent flexibility in terms of different fuels, battery-hybrid operation and many other fuel-saving features, will play an important role in the green transition of Attica’s Adriatic RoPax ferry operation – Superfast Ferries.”

“Our agreement with Stena RoRo regarding the charter of two new state-of-the-art vessels sets new standards for the entire Greek ferry industry. It drastically reduces our environmental footprint, redefines the travel experience, and is a powerful response to the challenges of tomorrow,” says Panos Dikaios, CEO of Attica Group.

Stena RoRo currently has 15 confirmed orders for E-Flexer vessels with CMI Jinling, Weihai shipyard, as well as two New Max RoRo vessels. Ten ships have been delivered.

HYROX - A RAPIDLY GROWING SPORT

Hyrox is a sport that combines running and functional strength exercises. Participants run one kilometer, perform a strength exercise, and repeat this cycle eight times, aiming to finish as quickly as possible. Sara Linnér, who works in customer support at Stena Recycling Sweden, has been practicing this fast-growing sport for almost two years. This spring, she participated in a competition in Copenhagen.

How did you get started with Hyrox?

A friend told me about Hyrox, and at that point, it had just come to Sweden. I thought it sounded fun, so we started training Hyrox-inspired sessions. In March, we went to Copenhagen together for our first competition.

What is required of the athletes?

Having a background in CrossFit or running is good, but I do not think it requires too much if you train regularly. Everyone can do it to their best ability. If you have the will, it’s possible.

What is your background in training?

I have always gone to the gym, but running has not been my strength. So, when I started with Hyrox, I had to put extra effort into running because it’s a big part of the sport.

How do you train?

You can combine pure running sessions, strength training, and Hyrox sessions. I mix different types of training based on what needs improvement. I do up to three running sessions a week—sometimes long runs and sometimes intervals. I also do strength workouts and specific Hyrox workouts to build endurance, which is very important.

Is there anything to keep in mind when trying Hyrox for the first time?

At the start, you might want to run as fast as possible, but you have to remember that you will repeat it eight times, so take it easy in the beginning. Also, if you plan to compete, there are many rules you need to follow, but there are people at each station ensuring you follow them.

How was the competition in Copenhagen?

I was nervous because I had never competed in anything like it before, but it was great. Competing with a friend made it fun and we pushed each other along the way. The atmosphere was incredible with lots of people and loud music. Afterward, you feel exhausted but proud of the accomplishment. It was a very cool experience.

Are there different competition formats in Hyrox?

Yes, there are various formats. In Copenhagen, my friend and I competed as a pair, sharing every station but running together. You can compete solo as a woman with lighter weights or as a pro with heavier weights. There are also mixed doubles, where a man and woman compete with the men’s pro weights, and mixed relay, where four people each run two kilometers and do two exercises.

Finally, what are your three best tips for those who want to start training with Hyrox?

  • Look up training sessions on Instagram and YouTube to get a feel for the sport and learn the basic techniques.
  • Attend training sessions in gyms that are similar to Hyrox, like CrossFit and running classes.
  • Start running, as it’s the base of the sport.
