STENA RECYCLING TAKES THE LEAD IN BATTERY RECYCLING

On March 30, Stena Recycling inaugurated its first industrial recycling facility for lithium-ion batteries, an investment of a quarter of a billion SEK. It is situated in Halmstad and is one of the first facilities of its kind in Europe. An advanced recycling process makes it possible to recycle 95 percent of an electric vehicle battery. Agreements are already in place with industry partners within both battery and vehicle production, securing a high recycling volume from the start.

INCREASED FOCUS ON BATTERY RECYCLING

As the world is rapidly turning electric the need for solutions when it comes to the recycling of batteries is gaining focus. Over the past year, Stena Recycling has invested heavily in the business area of batteries. Around Europe, battery centers are being built in which batteries from electric vehicles will be collected, discharged, and dismantled in a safe manner.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECT INCLUDES STENA OIL, STENA RECYCLING AND STENA STÅL

Stena Metall Group has several companies that are active in different areas. Every day, these companies work successfully and create value. In some projects, the Group's different companies come together to meet the challenge ahead. One example of such cooperation is the repair of the tank that Stena Oil took over from Stena Recycling. The work was done with steel plates supplied by Stena Stål.

ASSIGNMENT FOR POLESTAR

Stena Circular Consulting (SCC) has been commissioned by Polestar to analyze how their electric cars can be designed in the best possible way, from a circular perspective. For 12 weeks, three consultants from SCC analyzed existing and future models at component level. This according to a methodology developed by SCC, which can support Polestar in future production.

It has been 20 challenging years since Stena Recycling started its Polish operations. The company has evolved from a small organization focused on scrap to a leader in comprehensive waste management solutions and environmental services.

NORTHVOLT INITIATES COOPERATION WITH STENA RECYCLING

Northvolt has chosen Stena Recycling as recycling partner also for the production plant in Skellefteå, Sweden, where it will manufacture lithium-ion batteries for electric cars and energy storage. The overall focus will be to manage and recycle production waste as efficiently as possible, develop new recycling solutions, and ensure that valuable resources are circulated.

PLASTIC RECYCLING IN ITALY

A formal decision for Stena Recycling Italy to invest in recycling of plastics from electronic waste at the Angiari plant has now been taken. This is a unique and important development of the Italian recycling system.

NEW BATTERY RECYCLING PLANT

Stena Recycling is investing in a new battery recycling process. The investment involves a brand new facility in Halmstad and will make it possible to recycle 95 per cent of a lithium-ion battery, which is the most common battery used in electric vehicles.

COLLABORATION ON VEHICLE BATTERIES THAT CREATES BENEFITS AT SEVERAL LEVELS

On April 22, a world-leading system with energy storage for charging vehicles was inaugurated at the hygiene and health company Essity's business center in Mölndal. The project is another example of successful collaboration in which Stena Property and the Stena Recycling company BatteryLoop have worked with the automotive industry, in this case Volvo Cars, to develop a sustainable solution for electricity supply.

GROUNDBREAKING AND SUSTAINABLE RECYCLING OF HEAT EXCHANGERS

Stena Recycling and Alfa Laval are now launching a groundbreaking business model, based on a so-called take-back system, for sustainable and environmentally efficient recycling of heat exchangers. It enables up to 100 percent metal recycling.

When this interview is conducted, Tiina Lagerström is still manager of the Eskilstuna branch of Stena Recycling Sweden. But she’s in the starting blocks for a much greater role. On June 1st, she’ll namely become Opera-tions Manager at the Stena Recycling Finland’s head office in Vantaa.
