VOLVO CARS, STENA PROPERTY AND FRAMTIDEN ARE INVESTING HEAVILY IN A UNIQUE
COLLABORATIVE PROJECT IN SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
With the aim of creating a safe and attractive Tynnered with faith in the future.
Volvo Cars, Stena Property and the municipal housing company Framtiden are now joining forces and taking shared responsibility for the Tynnered residential area in Gothenburg in making it safer and more attractive. At the same time, they want to contribute to building faith in the future among those living in the neighborhood.
Stena Property owns just over 500 apartments on Briljantgatan and Smaragdgatan in Tynnered. Outdoor environments have been refurbished and facades, balconies and stairwells have been repainted and new lighting has been set up outdoors. New residential buildings and a nursing home are also being built in the neighborhood. Parts of Tynnered are referred to by the police as what they term a “particularly vulnerable area”, which among other things entails elements of high crime rates. Stena Property has many years of experience from creating secure and pleasant places for people to live, and this has received even greater attention in recent years, leading to increased satisfaction and a stronger sense of security among our tenants. And Stena Property is now taking another step in making things better.
The collaborative project is a business and strategic initiative with the goal of by 2025 making sure that Tynnered will no longer be a particularly vulnerable area, but instead an area characterized by faith in the future and entrepreneurship, where people can realize their dreams and create their own livelihoods. This is a long-term project and involves investments in education, leisure, jobs and sustainable urban development. At the same time, the companies are inviting more entities to participate in creating the conditions for strengthening Tynnered’s further development.
“Based on Framtiden’s experience from Gårdsten in northern Gothenburg, we know that it is possible to strike Tynnered from the police’s list of particular vulnerable areas,” says Terje Johansson President and CEO for Framtiden. “The future strategy for succeeding in doing the same with more areas entails a focus on faith in the future and safety through what we call super-management. Collaboration between Volvo Cars and Stena Property will demonstrate what can be achieved when the public and private sectors are pulling in the same direction.”
The project started in the spring of 2021 and is based on the companies’ experiences from creating safe and sustainable urban areas. Among the first initiatives that will be noticed in Tynnered are increased homework help and breakfast at schools, and a doubling of the number of summer jobs with the participating companies.
“Stena Property has many years of experience in offering thousands of summer jobs to youths,” says Cecilia Fasth, President and CEO of Stena Property. “We know the importance of the first line on CVs, which doors can be opened when you suddenly have access to a network or the difference it can make by getting help with homework. Together with the investments we’re making, and have made, in the neighborhood when it comes to housing, schools and leisure, I am convinced that Tynnered will be one of western Gothenburg’s most attractive areas in the future.”
During 2021, the companies will also jointly decide on a larger job initiative through a “job ladder” for youths from Tynnered. Collaboration will also include a study of the development of modern mobility solutions in the area. Also in 2021, the companies will propose the approach in making Tynnered an attractive destination by investing in local entrepreneurship.
“We at Volvo Cars are firmly convinced that with the involvement of committed residents and a focus on tangible activities that make a real difference, Tynnered, as well as other neighborhoods, can become breeding grounds for both talent and business ideas,” says Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.
“The goal is that by 2025, Gothenburg will not have any particularly vulnerable areas on the police’s list,” says Axel Josefson, chairman of the Gothenburg municipal board. “It’s a tough goal, but we see it as necessary for both the city and other stakeholders to invest in achieving this. All areas in Gothenburg must be safe places in which to live and work. And the development of the entire city is connected with development in our most vulnerable areas. It is therefore both gratifying and exciting that Volvo Cars, Stena Property and Framtiden are now shaping up collaboration in Tynnered.”
THE INTENTION IS THAT THE LONG-TERM COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WILL RESULT IN:
- Tynnered becoming a destination for many Gothenburgers
- Attractive schools with students attending both from the immediate area and from the rest of Gothenburg
- Better school results than the average in Gothenburg
- 1,500 summer jobs
- Job ladder for 300 youths
- 500 long-term jobs and increased employability
- 100 newly established businesses
- Offer of modern mobility solutions to everyone living in Tynnered
- 600 new homes in various forms of ownership
